Russia breeds billionaires amid impoverishment of the population
Russia continues to produce dollar billionaires amid the impoverishment of the overwhelming majority of the population, according to a report on the World Welfare prepared by Credit Suisse. Over the year, on average, Russian households impoverished by 14.4% - the average asset size per adult fell to $ 10,340, returning to the 10-year mark.
At the same time, the overwhelming majority of the population has a much lower level of welfare: the average figure takes into account data on the richest citizens, which distort the average indicator.
So, in 28 million Russians the size of assets does not exceed $ 248. According to the number of such people, the Russian Federation is located between Indonesia and Ethiopia and is included in a small group of countries (Ukraine, Nigeria, India), whose share in the poorest population of the earth is growing (by 1 percentage point from 2008 to 2016).
By the speed with which citizens were poor, the Russian Federation was among the world's top three leaders, with only Argentina (27% per year) and Ukraine (19%) behind.
At the same time, the concentration of wealth continues to increase, notes Credit Suisse. At present, 89% of the country's wealth is in the hands of the richest stratum, which is much higher than, for example, in the USA (78%) or China (73%).
Over the year, the number of billionaires in Russia increased by 6 people - to 96. The number of dollar millionaires fell by 16% - from 94 thousand to 79 thousand people.
Credit Suisse's assessment is confirmed by Capgemini: In Russia, 62% of wealth is in the hands of dollar millionaires, and 26% - in dollar billionaires.
'If millionaires control more than 50% of the country's wealth, there is practically no room for the middle class,' the company's report says.
According to the Federal State Statistics Service, the median salary in Russia barely exceeds 20,000 rubles. 35 million Russians earn up to 15 thousand rubles.
19.3 million people or about 14% of the population live below the poverty line - that is, they have an income below the subsistence minimum of 10524 rubles for able-bodied citizens, 8025 rubles for pensioners and 9677 rubles for children.
